The Superintendent is the senior manager responsible for all services performed by the Maintenance and Operations and Equipment Services divisions of the Public Works Department. The incumbent is an excellent leader who uses proven managerial skills and substantial work experience to plan, organize, and direct the efforts of approximately 85 full-time and 20 temporary employees toward achieving the mission of the Department. They represent Whatcom County’s unwavering commitment to excellent public service by demonstrating exemplary professionalism and personal character, and ensuring compliance with department and County policies and procedures, collective bargaining agreements and legal requirements. The Superintendent manages programs with fiscal restraint, recommending responsible budgets and expenditures. The Superintendent listens well and is a strong communicator who relies on effective relationships to advance strong, functional teams. This leadership position demands independent judgment, discretion, vision, and presence to meet the daily needs of employees and to position the department for a successful future.

 Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, construction management, public administration or a related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible professional management experience including administration of large civil projects and budgets and two (2) years of supervisory experience.

OR

Ten years of progressively responsible directly related experience in public works or construction operations, maintenance or engineering INCLUDING five years of supervisory experience.

Experience with public sector program or project management preferred.
