Job Summary
The Director of Buildings and Grounds reports directly to the Director of Finance and Operations and is responsible for the oversight of the physical plant, building maintenance, campus grounds, energy management, campus security, and transportation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Buildings and Grounds will:
- Oversee the physical operation of the main campus and its programs;
- Manage the careful maintenance of buildings and grounds and cleaning services that keep the school’s appearance in exemplary condition;
- Ensure facility readiness for day-to-day events as well as special events;
- Maintain public safety on campus and assist in the review and execution of the school’s crisis management plan;
- Manage an annual departmental budget;
- Supervise staff members within the buildings and grounds department: buildings and grounds and transportation;
- Oversee scheduling and staffing needed to meet the transportation needs of the school;
- Arrange bids and develop specifications for all outside contractual work;
- Oversee the work of all outside contractors to ensure compliance with contractual agreements and budgetary restrictions;
- Develop and implement a comprehensive and ongoing building, grounds, and equipment repair & replacement program;
- Develop and implement efficient/effective work order policies and procedures;
- Establish policies and protocols that meet all required environmental, health, and maintenance standards as required by law and work with the administration to ensure compliance with all regional, state, and federal regulations and laws as they impact the school;
- Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the Head of School.
Other Duties
- Job responsibilities will require some evening and weekend working hours;
- Respond to security alarms as needed, including communication and coordination as needed with first responders and security monitoring services;
- Respond as needed to weather, utilities, or other buildings or grounds related emergencies.
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related discipline is preferred;
- 5 to 10 years of experience in a supervisory/management role in construction, maintenance/repair; working knowledge of at least three trades is preferred (maintenance, plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, carpentry, construction);
- Prior experience in an educational or similar institution is preferred;
- Demonstrated success in managing a large multi-building facility;
- Strong supervisory, organizational, technical, and analytical skills;
- Proven success managing an annual budget;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Problem solver with a high degree of diplomacy;
- Strong technological skills a plus;
- Experience with blueprints and building specifications;
- Detail oriented;
- Able to work collaboratively with a team;
Strong customer service orientation.
