The Senior Building Inspector at Caltech will report to the Senior Director of Design and Construction. This position provides inspections for compliance with all applicable building, fire life/safety, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. This work requires field verification and plan review of both commercial and residential construction projects. The Senior Building Inspector works directly with various Caltech departments including Design and Construction, Facilities Management, Environmental Health & Safety, and Faculty & Student Housing.
This position requires a highly motivated, self-directed individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills that can effectively work with all levels of faculty, staff, and students, jurisdictional agencies within the City of Pasadena, and Contractors and their subcontractors.
Reviews building plans and specifications for all campus capital construction and renovation projects to assure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and building statutes and regulations.
Assists in the coordination of all required event permits as required by Title 19 - Title 24. Acts as the single point of contact to the PFD Event Fire Marshal.
Assists in the Pasadena city plan check process with regard to building and fire code compliance.
Provides analysis and short/long term solutions regarding improving overall campus ADA compliance.
Provides review and regular input for improvements to the Caltech design guide, guide specifications, and contract specifications.
Develops, implements, and maintains inspection and procedures to insure that the quality of renovation and new construction projects meets or exceeds the requirements of the California Building Code.
Provides staff training in areas related to OSHA requirements, Hot Work Permits, and other regulatory requirements.
Establishes and maintains an effective communication strategy developing and coordinating effective interrelationships with project managers, engineers, contract administrators, city building and fire inspectors, general contractors, and architects.
Performs other duties as required.
The expected outlook for this Senior Building Inspector position is to train into adopting Fire Marshall responsibilities for Caltech.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management plus minimum ten years of construction inspection experience, or, High School diploma plus minimum fifteen years of construction inspection experience.
Minimum ten years of construction inspection experience with appropriate California Building Codes by the International Code Council (ICC) or Division of State Architect (DSA) certification.
Must have excellent knowledge of construction policies and procedures.
Must have excellent knowledge of means and methods by which projects are constructed.
Experience in acting in the capacity of a liaison with the local fire authority in reviewing and coordinating building/facility inspections required by the Fire Code and Jurisdiction Agency.
Previous Fire Marshall experience or performing Fire Marshall duties.
